Black Lake
Black Lake is located three kilometers southwest of Žabljak (Žabljak Crno jezero km), at an altitude of 1418 meters above sea level. It is the largest lake in the Durmitor National Park and the second largest mountain lake in Montenegro. The lake is a symbol of this region and is under UNESCO protection.
Name and natural characteristics
The name of the lake comes from the dense coniferous forest reflected on its surface. Crno jezero consists of two parts - Big and Small Lake - connected by a natural strait. During the summer, the water level drops and the connection between these two parts can temporarily disappear.
The lake is filled by melting snow, springs such as the Čelina spring, and periodic waterfalls that activate in the spring. It is frozen in winter, while in summer the water warms up to 20°C (Black Lake water temperature), which is suitable for swimming.
Circle around the Black Lake
The well-maintained trail around the lake is 3.5 kilometers long (Circle of the Black Lake). It is accessible and suitable for walking, running or taking photos. The trail offers a view of the surrounding forests and the Međed peak that dominates the lake.
Hiking and walking trails
Black Lake is the starting point for several marked hiking and walking routes:
- Barno – Snake Lake – Black Lake
- Black lake – Stari katun (Lokvice) – Ice cave
- Saddle – Zeleni vir – Bobotov kuk
The trails vary in length and difficulty, and are suitable for walkers, recreationalists and experienced mountaineers.
Hydrological phenomenon - bifurcation
One of the natural rarities of Crno Jezero is its bifurcation – a phenomenon where water from the same lake flows underground into two different rivers: Tara and Piva. This phenomenon is extremely rare and makes the lake hydrologically unique in the region.
Tickets, contents and organization of the visit
A visit to Black Lake requires a €5 entrance fee, which includes access to the lakeside Visitor Center and educational trails. For additional recreation, boat rentals are available for €10 per hour, providing a unique experience of the lake from a different perspective.
The entrance to Crno Jezero allows visitors to enjoy the natural beauty, active recreation and educational facilities within the Durmitor National Park. It is recommended to plan your visit in advance, especially during the summer season when attendance is highest.
