Vražje Lake

Vražje jezero is located on the Jezerska Plateau in Durmitor National Park, approximately 12 kilometres southwest of Žabljak, along the old road towards Nikšić. Situated at an altitude of around 1,411 metres, it is one of Durmitor’s most attractive glacial lakes. Thanks to its easy accessibility, it has become an increasingly popular destination for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and visitors interested in the region’s cultural heritage.

Natural Features

Vražje jezero is a glacial lake formed during the last Ice Age. It is characterised by its deep blue water, relatively large surface area and distinctive circular shape, which is particularly striking when viewed from above.

The lake reaches a depth of up to 11 metres and is surrounded by gentle pastures and open mountain landscapes. This setting gives it a very different character from many of Durmitor’s other lakes, which are often hidden within dense forests.

Nearby lies Riblje jezero Riblje Lake, and the two lakes are often visited together as part of excursions across the Jezerska Plateau.

Biodiversity and Fishing

Despite its cold, high-altitude environment, Vražje jezero supports a variety of fish species. Recreational fishing is permitted in accordance with the regulations of Durmitor National Park, generally from May to October.

Fishing requires a daily permit, which can be obtained from park rangers. Anglers are permitted to use one fishing rod and artificial lures only.

Common species include trout, Arctic char and grayling. Catch-and-release fishing is recommended to help preserve the lake’s sensitive ecosystem.

Activities and Outdoor Experiences

Vražje jezero provides an excellent setting for a variety of outdoor activities:

  • Tandem paragliding: Flying above the Jezerska Plateau, with views over Vražje jezero and the surrounding landscapes, is one of the most exciting ways to experience Durmitor. Flights typically last around 15–20 minutes, while the entire experience takes approximately one hour.
  • Mountain biking: The lake lies along several cycling routes connecting Žabljak with the surrounding plateaus and lakes. Bicycles can be rented from local tourism agencies and accommodation providers.
  • Hiking and picnics: The open terrain and panoramic surroundings make the area ideal for walking, picnics and relaxed outdoor excursions.

There are no restaurants or other major tourist facilities directly at the lake. This lack of development, however, is an important part of its appeal, preserving the tranquillity and authentic character of the landscape.

Cultural and Historical Heritage

Close to the lake are two necropolises featuring stećci – medieval tombstones characteristic of this part of Southeast Europe.

These sites form part of the transnational UNESCO World Heritage property “Stećci – Medieval Tombstone Graveyards”, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2016.

Legends of Vražje jezero

The name Vražje jezero, meaning “Devil’s Lake”, is associated with numerous local legends, many of which contain symbolic and supernatural elements.

Stories of mysterious events and unexplained phenomena have been passed down through generations, adding a distinctive sense of mystery to the lake and its surroundings.

Although these legends are not based on documented historical events, they remain an intriguing part of local tradition and contribute to the unique character of this Durmitor lake.

Conclusion

Vražje lake is much more than an attractive natural landmark. It is a place where nature, cultural heritage and local legends come together to create a distinctive experience.

Its peaceful surroundings and vast open landscapes offer visitors an opportunity to enjoy photography, walking, outdoor activities or simply the tranquillity of the Durmitor countryside.

With its well-preserved natural environment, cultural significance and increasingly recognised appeal among visitors, Vražje jezero holds an important place in the identity of Durmitor and Montenegro’s natural heritage.
