Cultural tourism

Cultural tourism on Durmitor reveals the rich heritage of this region through sacred sites, historical and archaeological locations, traditional architecture, and legends passed down through generations. Cultural tourism here is not just about visiting landmarks, but about journeying through stories, beliefs, and traces of the past that give Durmitor its unique identity.

In the National Park, the most representative cultural assets are the monasteries in the Tara Valley – St. George in Dobrilovina, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Dovolja and St. Archangel Michael in Đurđevića Tara. The Tara monasteries, in addition to their high spiritual and religious significance, played an important role in the enlightenment and liberation struggle of the people of this area. Among the registered objects of a sacral character are the churches in Žabljak and the surrounding villages of Međužvalje, Krše, Tepci, Mala Crna Gora, Novakovići. These are modest single-nave churches, with bell towers on the facade, built of hewn stone, built in the first half and at the end of the 19th century.

Dobrilovina Monastery

The Monastery of Saint George in Dobrilovina is traditionally associated with the Nemanjić dynasty. The Dobrilovina Monastery, with a church dedicated to St. George, is located in the village of Donja Dobrilovina, in the gentle valley of the Tara River, on its left bank.

The first written record of the Dobrilovina Monastery dates back to 1592. The founder of the monastery is unknown. Several names are mentioned who participated in the restoration and painting of the monastery. In the second half of the 16th century, Dobrije Dedejić is mentioned, who settled in Dorilovina and donated his property to the monastery. The construction of the monastery buildings in Dobrilovina began in 1593, so that the entire monastery complex was completed in 1610.

The painting of the monastery began to be written on April 18, 1620. The influence of the Dobrilovina monastery was significant both on the local population and on the surrounding princes and beyond. His influence was felt throughout Potarje. Dobrilovina was the center of the gathering of champions from the wider area of Potarje and Polimlje, where important decisions were made on resistance to Turkish power.

Traces of human life in the Durmitor region date back to the Paleolithic era in pits and caves, temporary or permanent habitats of hunters and herders. The oldest evidence of ancient human presence in the Tara canyon comes from Gornja Dobrilovina. The material evidence found in Šalintrača and Đurova Pećina dates back to the Paleolithic and Metal Age. Downstream of Đurđevića Tara in Leveri, the preserved remains of a hillfort indicate the first settlement founded during the Bronze Age. At the Jularica site and above Luka na Žugića guvna, in Tepci, as well as in Vodeni do, there are a large number of unexplored Illyrian tumuli.

In Lever Tara, next to the caravan route that in ancient times connected Nikšić (municipality of Adverba) and the municipality of S in Komini near Pljevlja, at the Preslica site, in a naturally cut rock, an inscription dedicated to the oriental deity Mithras is carved in the field of a pagan altar, whose cult was revered throughout the Roman Empire in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. In the Park area and its immediate surroundings, there are numerous medieval necropolises, which the locals call "Greek" or "Roman" cemeteries, with an abundance of stećak tombstones from the 14th and 15th centuries. The most interesting stećak tombstones are those with decorative sculptures of human and animal figures and hunting scenes, in Novakovići, Bare Žugića, Baćevnik, Tepci, Begova ravna, Boričje.

The rich and multi-layered cultural and historical heritage of Durmitor can be traced from the oldest prehistoric eras to the present day, where the influences of various cultures have continuously changed. The preserved remains of the prehistoric era are characterized by several tumuli (burial mounds), which testify to the presence of the Illyrians in this area. From the time of Roman domination, clear evidence remains in the wider area of the Park - cippus, stone bridges, caravan routes.

The medieval period includes necropolises with stylized stećak tombstones, ruins of Turkish bridges and watchtowers along the old Montenegrin-Turkish border, the ruins of the ancient Pirlitor fortress above Lever and three monasteries in the Tara valley, in Dobrilovina, Dovolja and in Đurđevića Tara, built from the 15th to the 17th centuries. The Durmitor region has a diverse traditional architectural heritage with individual examples of village log towers, and on the katuns, savardaci, jatar, huts and on the river courses, wooden watermills and rolling mills.

The special value of cultural tradition is represented by folk spiritual creativity expressed through legends and traditions, anecdotes and proverbs, epic poetry and partisan songs, inspired by the nature, personalities and events of the Durmitor region.

The construction of traditional architecture, which is increasingly disappearing, has an important place within the cultural heritage of the Durmitor region. Folk architecture is characterized by types of village houses built of stone, or built of logs with a stone foundation, with steep roofs covered with rye straw, shingles, klis or planks. These are ground-floor houses, real towers, log cabins and towers with a cell. In winter habitats and in katuns, summer shepherd's dwellings in the mountains, stables, huts and savardacs, jatars, kućares, torovs and torines are used. Numerous katuns are mainly formed above the villages in the valleys of the mountain massif (SljivanskoBorev doKaludjerski katunGood toAlišnicaBig and Little ŠtuocPondsOrin cottonŠibalića katunPasha's water etc.) Watermills and rolling mills (stupa) served on the rivers. The watermills were built as log cabins, and there were also stone ones. They existed on Mlinski potok, Sušica, Tepački potok, Ograđenica, Bukovica, Komarnica.

According to some old legends, the Greek gods from Olympus chose Durmitor as their resting place and retreat. Durmitor is a mythical mountain, associated with numerous legends and myths. There is hardly a single toponym that is not connected to an interesting story — one that, in fact, reflects the power and strength of Durmitor. We will mention only some of them, while the rest may remain the product of imagination or personal discovery.

Take a look at the brochure about the legends of Durmitor!

A stout guy named Todor fell in love with a beautiful girl Ružica from the neighboring village. He was young and strong.

Mountain fairies who lived in the forests of the high peaks of Durmitor, at sunset, descended to the foot of the mountain to dance a circle in the meadows full of flowers. They would hold hands and dance their dance, making a circle. The fairies were of exceptional beauty and seduced even the best men. Only the chosen ones were allowed to dance in their circle.

Once they invited him to the mountain to join their circle, on the condition that he did not bring any weapons with him. But Todor forgot to leave behind the knife, which as a shepherd he always carried. He came to the fairies and enjoyed their games for a long time. Then the fairies saw his knife. Angry about the knife, and perhaps out of envy of Todor's love for Ruzica, they lifted him into the clouds and threw him down the cliffs.

According to legend, Todor fell on his chest and broke off a part of the mountain. That's how the peak in the immediate vicinity of Prutaš got the name Gruda. Todor found his eternal peace in the valley, under the mountain, and the valley was named after him - Todor's do.

Due to loss and great sadness, Ružica headed for the mountains on the opposite side, from which she never returned.

While the shepherds mourned for Todor and his beautiful Ružica, the fairies rejoiced in revenge, celebrated with song and dance on top of the mountain. After the game, tired and intertwined in a circle, they fell asleep.

The shepherds thought of a way to avenge Todor and Ružica. They wove their shepherd's staffs and branches into a ladder and climbed the steepest cliffs of the mountain unnoticed. At the very top, they found the fairies asleep. They took advantage of the opportunity and tied their golden hair into a bundle, and then tied the hair to a black rock that they pushed down the mountain. The unbearable pain woke the fairies, and their desperate cries echoed through the mountain.

Heavy rocks tore out their hair, and they lost their power. They hid deep in a cave on Durmitor, which is now called the Fairy Cave. All that remained were branches and shepherd's staffs – rods – which over time turned into stone, thus giving the mountain its name: Prutaš.

In another version of the legend, the fairies tried to hold on to the rocks with their long nails to keep from falling into the abyss. They scratched the surface of the rocks and left deep marks behind them – the shards, which can still be seen today.

Prutas is not only impressive when viewed from the foothills. It is a favorite among mountaineers, because from its top it offers one of the best views of the Durmitor region.
