Bobotov Kuk – TO Žabljak

Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m) is the highest peak of the Durmitor massif and the highest point entirely within the territory of Montenegro. Located within the Durmitor National Park, under UNESCO protection since 1980, it is one of the main hiking and tourist destinations in Montenegro.

Geographical and morphological characteristics

The Durmitor massif rises from the canyons of the Tara and Piva rivers, with a height difference of over 2,000 meters. In its central zone, within a radius of six kilometers, there are as many as 48 peaks above 2,000 m, of which Bobotov Kuk is the only one above 2,500 m.

The peak itself is characterized by sharp relief and rocky structure, with a view that encompasses a large number of other Durmitor peaks: Prutaš, Šljeme, Savin Kuk, Međed, Minin Bogaz, Sedlena and Uvita Greda, and the vast valleys of Lokvica and Valovita.

The trail is marked and technically medium demanding, with the final part containing metal cables and belays. It is suitable for physically prepared hikers and requires appropriate equipment.

At an altitude of 2,523 meters, Bobotov Kuk offers one of the widest and most impressive views in Montenegro. Among the Durmitor peaks that dominate the view, the following stand out:

In addition to the central peaks of Durmitor, it is also possible to see wider areas of Montenegro and the region from the top. Views include:

Tara Canyon and part of the plateau Sinjajevine
Maglić Mountains (the highest peak of Bosnia and Herzegovina), Bioč, Volujak
Coma and parts Damned
On clear days, on the horizon can be seen and Skadar Lake i Adriatic Sea

This point offers a panorama that encompasses even the most remote parts of Montenegro, providing a clear insight into the ramified and diverse morphology of the Dinaric system.

Season for climbing

The most suitable period for the climb is from June to October. In the early summer months, there may be residual snow on some parts of the trail, especially on the northern exposures.

Protection and security

Bobotov Kuk is located within the Durmitor National Park. Movement is allowed only on marked trails. It is recommended:

Bring enough water
Use of hiking equipment
Registration in the hiking book and informing the local NP service

Importance and recommendation for visitors

Bobotov Kuk has multiple significance: geomorphologically as the highest point of Durmitor, symbolically as the central peak of Montenegrin mountaineering, and as an easily recognizable tourist destination. The Sedlo – Bobotov Kuk climb is the most common choice of visitors, but requires basic physical fitness, appropriate footwear, and careful movement on the final sections.

It is recommended to climb during the season from June to October, with mandatory prior checking of weather conditions.
